Prom

By Matthew Stanislawski

Last week it was late at night and I was fixing to go to bed when one of my friends texted me. He asked me what I was gonna do for prom. Honestly the question never really came to my mind. I was thinking back in my previous years of how my brothers have asked and all the different ways I’ve seen on social media. I don’t want to steal someone’s idea, yet a little inspiration from someone is always good. After I thought to myself for a good 30 minutes I was stumped. I’m not very good when it comes to creative ideas like this so I decided to search some up online. I’ve seen things from corny jokes to some over the board stuff like flying in a helicopter and having “Prom?” written out in candles.

The next morning I talked with my friend and asked him what he was going to do. To no avail he didn’t come up with anything either. I don’t want to ask in a boring way because I know a night like this is special to a girl. Later in the night on that same day I decided to call one of my brothers and asked him how he took his girl to prom. When he told me what he had done I couldn’t tell if he was being serious or sarcastic. He told me he drove her to the local airfield and flew a helicopter and landed in the school’s parking lot. The reason why I thought he was joking is because the first thing that came to my mind was if that was even legal and the second thing was how he was even able to fly a helicopter much less landing it in a parking lot. He told me he wasn’t messing with me at all and I went to my mom to confirm this information. She told me he was telling the truth and I was shocked to say the least. I know I can’t pull anything nearly that creative and with the prom right around the corner I didn’t have much time.

I decided to get advice from my mom because I figured it’s always good to get advice from both sides. When she asked me what I was going to do for prom I told her I had no idea and I needed help. She told me it isn’t about how you ask a girl to prom, it’s the fact that you asked her over anyone else. I thought about that for a good minute or two and decided she was right. Honestly that little talk relieved me of the weight I had building up on my shoulders as the prom date kept getting closer and closer. So I just went with a cheesy line and she said yes. Happy with her response I told my friend what I did and he did the same with the same results. I guess I learned that words speak louder than actions in some cases, because even though I couldn’t think of a creative way to ask her it’s the fact that I asked her over anyone else is what truly matters.
