Unicorn Frappucino: Creative Bust or Magical Experience?

On April 19, 2017, Starbucks shocked the world with the release of the Unicorn Frappuccino. Already creating quite the controversy, the colorful drink attracted Starbucks regulars and curious civilians alike.

Junior Alexis Smith was traumatized by the drink and makes it clear that the Unicorn Frappuccino does not live up to its hype:

I had the the opportunity to try the infamous Unicorn Frappuccino on the day of its release. With hints of mango, sour drizzles, and a whole lot of food coloring, I was fairly optimistic to try this drink. However, to say I was unpleasantly surprised is an understatement. If you want a drink that reminds you of your youthful days of slurping yogurt and eating sour candy until your mouth burns, then this drink is for you.

Upon the first sip, I was overwhelmed with an excessively sweet taste, which I expected from a pink and purple drink. I did not, however, expect the sour blue goop which monopolized the drink beyond repair. Every sip I took was greeted with the artificial taste of fake rainbows and crushed dreams.

Even Starbucks barista Braden Burson describes the beverage as drinking a “sweet tart.”

Much to the barista’s delight, the drink will only be available until the 23rd of April. If you don’t satisfy your sweet tooth by then, it’s back to cake on a stick and hard scones.

No hard feelings toward Starbucks, though. You’ll still be my number one stop for what you’re good at: coffee.

After that wonderful review, Junior Emma Wiborg was hesitant to try the drink. But as a fervent Starbucks customer, she couldn’t resist getting her hands on the unique and sweet treat:

I waited in the drive through line for about ten minutes before I ordered my drink, all the while I was debating my life choices. When I finally got to the window and saw all the Unicorn Frappuccinos lined up on the counter for the cars behind me, I jokingly apologized for having to have been the millionth person ordering the drink that day.

I couldn’t help but smile the moment I saw my drink. It was like I was crossing something off of my bucket list! I quickly parked in a Kroger parking lot and took all the necessary instagram photos I needed before I could taste.

Not a fan of mango, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked the drink. The blue, sour drizzle on the side was oddly good once mixed in. Apart from being confused by the flavors, the drink was amazing and like nothing you would expect Starbuck to create.

A lot of people who tried the drink claimed it was “excessively sweet” but I thought is was refreshing until the very last sip. It’s unfortunate that the drink is only available until April 23 and then it’s back to Strawberries n’ Cream Frappuccino for me.

After my magical experience, I only regret not getting a venti. I needed more of this weird and wild concoction!
