FMHS PTSA working hard for a safe prom night

Underage drinking is a phenomena that has taken the nation by storm. 47 percent of teenagers have claimed to have had at least 12 drinks in the past year. Of that 47 percent, over half have been binge drinking scenarios. The PTSA, highly aware of these numbers, is working hard to break the statistic and ensure that their students will be responsible on prom night.

Outside the cafeteria, there is a booth set up where students can read information on alcohol poisoning and the effects of underage drinking. In addition, there are police officers giving demonstrations on the effects of being intoxicated. There are goggles that simulate the effects of being under the influence of alcohol, as well as marijuana. The students participating are asked to walk a straight line and attempt to catch tennis balls while “under the influence.”

“It didn’t feel like I had control of my body. There is no way I could have driven safely,” student Emma Wiborg said.

In addition, there is also a wrecked car displayed in the parking lot. With the intent of providing an impactful message, the car has done just that.

“I know I’m not going to be drinking on prom night, but the efforts being made by the school have really solidified my decision,” junior Nina Alapati said.

Students are encouraged to practice safe driving and to provide the safest possible conditions for students on the road, as well as others.

“When it comes to drinking while driving, it’s just not worth the risk. Too many lives are at stake, and I couldn’t live with myself if I ever hurt someone because I was making bad decisions,” Alapati said.

The efforts being made to promote safe behaviors on prom night are difficult to go unnoticed. Many students have been impacted by the horrifying statistics and visuals on display.
