Halloween traditions vary among the students at FMHS. From the memories of children in costumes to candy preferences, the holiday means something different to everyone.
Chemistry teacher Brian Dalak recalls that his favorite Halloween memories were actually from the night before Halloween, a night they called devils night. This is when children from town would go out and egg houses, soap cars, etc.
“It became more of a sport,” Dalak said. “People would actually go hide up on their roof with water hoses to spray anyone who came up onto their lawn. This was in Detroit, so that water was cold enough to get anyone to run off.”
Then there is the baseline of candy, a staple in almost all Halloween traditions.
“I absolutely love the popcorn balls,” senior Harper Fagerquist said. “And any chocolate comes in a close second.”
Snickers, Reese’s, Kit Kat, Butterfinger, and Milky Way have proven to be the top 5 candies of choice in a recent study (examiner.com) regarding Halloween candies. Though these candies are preferred among children and parents alike, others treasure the holiday for non- chocolate pleasures such as Twizzlers and Starbursts.
Decorations dress the neighborhoods of many on Halloween night.
“My favorite decoration would have to be the inflatable ghosts,” senior Diego Palomarez said.
Fake spider webs and ghosts litter the yards of many on Halloween night. The nostalgia of handing out candy provokes the best attitudes in parents as children run around aimlessly searching for their one true desire.
