On October 27, the FMHS Bass Club competed in a tournament on Grapevine Lake.
Despite the chilling 34°F weather beginning the morning, 20 teams still showed up to compete.
FMHS came in first with the team of junior Bobby Burwinkle and junior Jason Johnson, whose catch totaled 14.21 pounds.
“It was fun; we did bad until the very end and we just caught the lucky two fish that won the tournament for us,” Jason Johnson said.
Flower Mound’s junior Jordan Speckles and junior Weston Cronan also placed well in the tournament. Trailing the second place team by 1.10 pounds with a score of 10.71, they placed third in the tournament.
Bobby Burwinkle, Jason Johnson, Jordan Speckles, and Weston Cronan have all been fishing since the day they could hold a fishing rod.
17 of the 25 students from FMHS competed in the tournament.
“They are scored by taking their five biggest fish to the scales,” Steve Davis, the wrestling coach said.
It was a nail-biting competition, with Flower Mound trailing behind by only a few.
“We won in the last five minutes. My friend Jason Johnson caught the winning fish,” Bass Club president Bobby Burwinkle said.
Their next tournament will take place some time in March, the exact time and date not yet announced.
