November 29th was a day for new friendships to be formed.
Every year, all of the high schools in LISD come together for a traditional friendship dinner. Each school sends Student Council and some National Honor Society officers as representatives to this event.
The dinner venue switches off between the LISD schools. Flower Mound hosted the dinner this year.
Student Council, also known as StuCo, is an organization that serves the student body. The club develops leaders and governs the high school, and takes care of a variety of school events such as prom, homecoming, and spirit days. StuCo provides a way for students to share their ideas, interests and concerns with teachers and other administrators.
“The dinner itself is a recurring tradition,” senior StuCo officer Alexis McFarland said.
Each year the student council chooses a theme for the event; this year the hosting school chose “Winter Wonderland”. The hosting school held a number of activities to go along with the theme. The first activity was the traditional dinner. Salerno’s, a popular local Italian restaurant, catered the dinner this year. Flower Mound High School’s Student Council also provides a wide variety of team-building games.
“One of my favorite games was the cookie decorating contest,” freshman StuCo officer Shruthika Kamat said. “I also really liked the hot chocolate station and all of the fun Christmas-related relay races.”
Representatives from all of the schools gave speeches. Student Council Senior President Solji Jung gave a majority of the speeches for FMHS. The speeches welcomed the other schools to Flower Mound, and introduced all of the officers in each grade.
“The main purpose of the traditional friendship dinner is to meet the other officers and it is symbolic of the friendly competition,” McFarland said. “It was nice to meet other officers and compare Student Council ideas. It was the first time this school year all the student councils got together and reminds students that we might go to different schools but we are all here for the same purpose.”
The school also showed support for Toys for Tots. FMHS collected around two to three giant boxes of toys for donation.
“I thought Toys for Tots was a good addition to the Friendship dinner. The program is a charitable organization that delivers the joy of Christmas to children that can’t afford presents,” Kamat said.
The friendship dinner was held to bring all of the Student Council Officers in the LISD district together. Aside from having the chance to meet new people, student council also donated Christmas gifts to children around the world.
