The EOC Extravaganza, hosted by Mrs. Gibson in December, was a way of “speed teaching”. The speed teaching consisted of certain chemistry concepts set to be covered in the end of course exam (EOC).
“This was a great opportunity for us to try something new,” Gibson said. “It was our attempt to prepare students for a test that was given earlier than normal and to make students ready.”
Six teachers, each an expert in different concepts, taught a variety of chemistry concepts during the Extravaganza. Students rotated among experts to expand their knowledge of the concepts.
“It was a speed-teach process of all-readiness and supporting standards,” Gibson said.
To make the up-beat process even more interesting, teachers used video clips, lectures, games, lab demos, and gave out take-home practice tests to further teach the ideas.
“We had a chance to cover the topics that we would not have ordinarily,” sophomore Chad Flenar said. “I felt more confident about taking the EOC, because we learned nuclear and thermo chemistry, solutions, acids, bases and gases.”
As the fast pace compilation of teaching, many of the students felt that the EOC Extravaganza further explained key concepts about chemistry.
“The EOC Extravaganza was a really good way to familiarize me with what was going to be on the test,” sophomore Megan Wright said.
After the event took place teachers feel the students that participated have a better grip. Although the chemistry EOC has past for some, students say they would “love” to do another extravaganza in due time.
