What do you get when you mix together a blonde sorority girl from California, Harvard law school, and lots and lots of pink? For the first time ever, the Flower Mound Theater department will be presenting Legally Blonde: The Musical.
Elle Woods (Brooklyn Smith) is the typical blonde stereotype. She is the president of her sorority, Delta Nu, and the most popular girl on campus. She even has the “hottest” boyfriend in the fraternity, Warner Huntington III (Ben Hladky). All Elle wants is for Warner to pop the question, but there’s only one thing that’s stopping him: Elle doesn’t suit his expectations for the girl of his dreams. Devastated, Elle decides to follow Warner to Harvard, in hopes that she can win him back. Along the way, Elle soon learns more than she ever thought possible and starts to realize her true potential.
Released just this year for schools, Legally Blonde was quickly snatched up by many directors and found its way to Flower Mound High School. The play is being directed by Theater Arts Department Head Scott Taylor and choir director Mark Rohwer.
“The choir director and I begin discussing next year’s musical after the current show closes,” Taylor said. “We felt like it was time to do a contemporary show. Of course, the production also came with a few concerns. How on earth would I find dogs to play Bruiser and Rufus?”
The students’ last month of rehearsal and performances for the previous show helped determine which show to pick this year.
“We felt like we had the right students to fulfill the necessary roles in order to do it,” said Taylor.
Since the casting in September, the group of 170 students, including actors and techs, have been diligently working since October. Set design began in the summer.
“ Production has been coming along extremely well,” said Taylor. “The students have a great desire to perform well and more importantly, have fun while rehearsing and performing.”
During the performances, Flower Mound High School’s International Thespian Society Troupe #6154 will be collecting items for the Flower Mound Humane Society. The troupe will be accepting pet care items for donation to the charity. In addition, the troupe will hold a silent auction to assist troupe members in attending the International Thespian Society National Festival and the Texas State Thespian Festival.
Show times are scheduled for February 1-4 at the Donna and Clark Auditorium. Shows on February 1-2 and 4 (Friday, Saturday and Monday) are scheduled at 7 P.M. with a matinee performance on the 3rd (Sunday) at 2 P.M. Tickets are sold at the Flower Mound High School Main Office Atrium and at the auditorium lobby. Reserved tickets are $15,$12 and $8. General tickets are on sale for $8.
The performance is not suitable for young children due to the play’s content.
