The Jaguar Wrestling team captured its seventh consecutive District Championship at Coppell High School on February 1, edging out runner-up Coppell by 26 points.
FMHS advanced all 14 athletes to the Region II Championships that were held on February 2 in Allen.
These students include freshman Noah Gile; sophomore Blaine Odom; juniors Weston Cronan, Grant Julius, Branson Roberts, and Jordan Speckels; and seniors Dylan Akers, Scott Akers, Drake Dudley, Ed Klecka, Tanner Novak, Temple Park, David Wojcicki, and Clayton Vonderluft.
Once again, the FMHS wrestling team received the championship trophy. But with each successful year, the pressure grows to keep the winning streak alive.
“Each year during our winning streak, we have graduated at least 12 seniors,” head wrestling coach Steven Davis said. “It falls to the underclassmen to rise to the challenge. Seniors graduate—tradition does not.”
Although the wrestling team has already won the district championships, the team hopes to become the State Champions.
“Until we become the State Champions, we will always have room to improve. Each season, no matter how successful, we must begin all over again,” Davis said.
The top-four athletes in each weight class at the Regional Championship will earn a spot in the UIL State Championship Tournament taking place in Austin from February 21 to 23.
