Every year the HEB grocery store chain gives out a scholarship called Excellence in Education to selected Independent School Districts, and this year Lewisville ISD was one of the five regional finalists for this $100,000 scholarship.
Even though LISD has not won the scholarship yet, they will receive $5,000 for becoming a regional finalist.
On Monday, February 25, a panel of judges visited the campuses to walk around and talk to students and teachers. Junior Andrew Cummings has no doubt that LISD will win the scholarship.
“We have excellent scholastic scores, hard-working students and a low violence rate,” Andrew said. “It’s hard to get much better than us.”
LISD’s application for the scholarship was extremely thorough and well thought out. It accented a few of the many stretches that the district goes through to comply with Strategic Design. The programs that made it to LISD’s final application were: leadership development, technology integration, dual-language, community partnerships, and Advancement Via Individual Determination.
Furthermore, many schools and districts apply for the Excellence in Education multiple times before even getting named a regional finalist.
“I find it really impressive that after only one application LISD was a regional finalist, when so many schools never even get nominated, ”Andrew said.
Lewisville ISD is up against Rock Round, Humble, McAllen, and Southwest ISDs. The state winner of the HEB Excellence in Education Awards will be announced on May 3rd at the Hilton Hotel.
