On April 12 and 13, a state-wide Latin competition was held at Marcus High School.
FMHS Latin students of various levels participated in the competition. Competitors are tested in a variety of events like Greek history, Roman History, sight recitation, mythology, or geography.
“I competed in Latin derivatives, Greek life and literature, and a talent show,” Senior Divya Narayanan said. “As far as academics go, Greek life and literature was my favorite because I had to go out of my comfort zone to research a different culture.”
Lots of preparation went into this competition, and there were plenty of resources available to participants.
“There are past tests that you can look up,” Narayanan said. “There are also lots of books at Barnes & Noble specifically for these subjects.”
Narayanan, a veteran level competitor, stands at the highest level in competitive Latin.
“There are different tiers which go by level, but that depends on what level of Latin you’ve taken,” Narayanan said. “There are levels 1 through 4 for the first four courses. For Latin 5 and above, you are considered a veteran.”
Latin teacher Adam Sales felt good about the performance of his students.
“I feel the students were exceedingly well-prepared, especially those who advanced to the next level,” Sales said.
“It’s the effort that you put in and how much interest you have in placing,” Narayanan said. “It’s a great experience to make friends and see where you are in comparison to state and at the national level.”
The national Latin competition takes place this summer throughout the last week of July.
