You’ll want to Play It Again
October 17, 2013
At 9 years old, Rebecca Marie Gomez, better known as rising music star Becky G, had to wiggle her way into commercials to earn money for her family during a financial struggle. The stress of being an older sister, a victim of bullying, and a member of a financially strapped family led her to release her emotions through music.
Having produced multiple songs, she looks back at the progress she has made since then. Becky recently released “Becky From The Block” and “Play It Again”, and has already received millions of views on her VEVO channel.
Becky finds the inspiration to write music from her experiences and heritage. Her music includes a distinct Spanish influence, and in the music video for “Becky From The Block”, she includes many family and friends to emphasize her lyrics and love of family.
The song itself is a reminiscence of her childhood and her loyalty to it. Becky explains her groundedness at home no matter where her steadily climbing career takes her. The quick tempo of the song mixed with the meaningful lyrics led to a sense of captivation.
A similar pattern is established in “Play It Again”. Though Becky seems to be growing much older as she releases her songs, “Play It Again” reveals her fun-spirited personality. The lyrics speak about her becoming stronger and more confident as her music becomes popular. The exciting rhythm of the song blends in perfectly with the carefree feel of the lyrics.
I would recommend Becky’s music to those who love a fast-paced beat, and although not the genre of music I listen to regularly, I would not mind expanding my tastes for Becky. The music is different and interesting to listen to—especially since it was made by a 16 year old—and I have a feeling that the songs she will come out with next will not disappoint.
Becky has already captured the attention of many with her wide range of talents and charm. She’s a young girl determined to pursue her dreams with a clear goal, a plan, and a purpose.
