Started from the Bottom

Senior Yong Ha Jung, a violist for eight years, recently took a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that any musician would die for.

“[I was invited] to play on From the Top, a radio show where young classical musicians are able to perform and get interviewed by host Chris O’Riley,” Jung said. “I was really nervous at first but it turned out to be really enjoyable.”

Jung’s childhood was filled with music. His family surrounded him with it and exposed him to instruments at a young age.

“My mom was a pianist, so I grew up with music as a child,” Jung said. “[I owe my accomplishments] to my parents and teacher.”

Starting off with the viola, Jung didn’t particularly love playing an instrument at first. However, as time went on, he appreciated it more.

“[I chose viola] because everyone plays violin or cello,” Jung said. “It used to just be something my mom made me do, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve begun to really enjoy it.”

Now, Jung is fully dedicated to playing the viola and hopes that he can continue with music as his life goes on.

“I am going to audition for schools and competitions, and perform with the Plano symphony in the near future,” Jung said. “I hope to be able to go to a good school so I can improve myself. I plan to major in viola performance and eventually make a living off of it.”

Over eight years of competition, practicing, and frustration that comes with learning an instrument, Jung’s motivation has only grown.

“I just enjoy making music,” Jung said. “[I also like] being able to connect with friends who share the same memories.”

Jung’s hard work and love of music led directly to his opportunity to play on From the Top, his “biggest accomplishment” to date. As for anyone beginning an instrument, Jung advises to find what you love.

“Don’t do anything you don’t want to do,” Jung said.
