The landscape of Flower Mound High School is becoming increasingly different as construction continues on the new 9th grade campus and outdoor sports complex.
The baseball field, tennis courts, and practice field have been completely demolished, leaving a field of newly exposed dirt behind. In order to alleviate parking congestion, more student parking will replace the previous location of the baseball field.
The 9th grade campus, expected to open for the 2014 school year, will be constructed where the tennis courts once stood. It will include a covered walkway to and from the main campus. The design features a square building for classrooms between the main campus and the new circular learning hub.
In the words of math teacher Megan Uken, the9th grade campus will function as a school that “acknowledges the past, but is firmly focused on the future.” The school will “be both aesthetically pleasing and incredibly functional. It will be a place of uninhibited learning and collaboration. Of creativity and of innovation,” Uken said.
Across Peters Colony from FMHS, construction of the new sports complex is well under way. The new complex will include the tennis courts, baseball field, and other outdoor sports facilities that were replaced by the construction. Completion is expected before the 2013-2014 school year, in time for football season.
Along with the additions and updates to the school, FMHS will receive Java City, a coffee shop for students and faculty, in the library. Students can buy their morning fix of caffeine at school, avoiding the early morning run to Starbucks. The readily available, easily accessible coffee has students very excited, and it will be a great fundraiser for the school.
