Droppin’ it with Trevor Jackson
November 13, 2013
Trevor Jackson’s music video for “Drop It”, off of his new album #NewThang, is one that tests the boundaries of the typical R&B scene. It doesn’t focus solely on elements such as drugs and sexual tendencies, which are common of a run-of-the-mill rap music video. Jackson’s image revolves around one concept and that concept alone: the music and the emotion it creates.
As a 17 year old starting his career in the music industry, Jackson is coming out with a bang. His single, “Drop It” is catchy and has a beat that is captivating and demands immediate attention.
His fame has spawned from his role in the Disney movie Let It Shine, which could initially make him seem like just another Disney turn-out, soon-to-be burn out. Upon closer inspection, however, I’ve found that Jackson has real talent. Not only can he sing and act; he can dance.
The music video for “Drop It”, choreographed by Dave Scott, has moves that look like they were snatched straight from a scene out of Step Up. The dancers move with determination and intensity to create an artful depiction of the emotion felt for Jackson’s music.
“When you dance I start to lose all control,” Jackson sings. The collective body movement in the “Drop It” video illustrates that loss of control on all accounts.
Even the backdrop of the video adds an element of vehemence, with its hues of red light and slum-like setting.
“Drop It” is an upbeat song that was meant to be the background music for a dance off; the music video takes it to the next level. While perhaps not the most intellectually driven lyrics, the words combined with the scenes created in the video evoke emotions and passion, as all great music is expected to do. While critics may accuse him of being just another wannabe teen rapper that tests the limits of proper English, that’s not the case here. As an artist, Trevor Jackson, if nothing else, has immense potential and people should definitely expect more from him soon.
