The movie One Day is a mix of love, hope, and sad coincidences. Starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, this movie is a tale of two friends, who took 20 years to realize they each were exactly what they were looking for all those years.

On July 15, 1988, the day of their graduation, two people from opposites sides of life become the most unlikely pair of best friends. Emma (Anne Hathaway), who wants to make the world a better place and comes from a working-class family, wants to be a writer. Meanwhile, Dexter (Jim Sturgess), thinks the world bends to his will and is a playboy. For the next 20 years, they go about their lives, agreeing to meet every July 15th and share their lives, dreams, tears, and laughter together. Until they discover that they each are what they’ve been searching for all this time, eventually falling in love.

The movie takes place in Europe, with Anne Hathaway’s character living in London and Jim Sturgess’s character living not far away but always traveling it seems. Emma and Dexter go on a adventure of being there for each other in times of sadness and despair, and lifting each other up in time of happiness. Dexter gets married and has a daughter with a woman who is cheating on him while Emma dates a co-worker from an old job who is a terrible stand up comedian. Emma struggles to make her dream of being a writer come true while Dexter settles for being the host of a TV show with fame and fortune.

One Day is an ironic love story of two people meant for eachother who come together about 13 years into their friendship. But only a few short years after they get married, and after having a year of failed attempts of getting pregnant to have a child, Emma is on her way to meet Dexter for a romantic date after the past few weeks of stress, when she gets run over by a truck while riding her bike to meet Dexter. Emma dies almost on direct impact, for it takes a few minutes until anyone walks by and can help or call 911. In the years following, Dexter is falling apart, and his ex-wife is worried and takes him to Dexter’s father’s house. He tells Dexter to just imagine that Emma is still with him the way his father imagines Dexter’s mother after she died of cancer. Dexter gets his life back together, opens up a bakery, and adventures with his daughter to the places that were special to him and Emma.

One Day is a romantic movie that will stir your emotions. It’s a movie of life’s struggles and how two different people can be the best of friends and fall in love. Two people who face life’s obstacles after obstacles overcome it all in the end.
