Mandy’s Fresh Start

Megan Murphy

Mandy sat on the front porch of her cottage home looking out at the beach in front of her. She knew it was the right decision to move into a home right on the beach, especially a little cottage that looked like it came straight from a fairytale. She just didn’t know if it was the right thing to go to that town board meeting where an arrogant selfish playboy somehow was the head of the board and had tried to hit on her. She could handle telling a guy she wasn’t interested, especially if he was an arrogant jerk. But something about Max Wellington caught her off guard and she found herself actually falling for his good looks and charm.

The next day, Mandy set out to try again and get a job. She was looking through the available jobs in the newspaper when suddenly she ran into somebody. She looked up quickly to apologize when she realized she ran into Max. He smiled a grin at her that made her face turn bright red. He asked where she was going and she simply replied, “Job hunting.” Mandy didn’t want to be around this man who crumbled her strong independent ways with just a simple smile. Max looked at Mandy and asked if she knew much about secretary positions. Mandy couldn’t help but say yes being as how that was her job in the past city she lived in and she was good at it, she had multiple companies trying to get her to quit her past job and work for them. Even though Mandy was looking for a fresh start and relaxation, she agreed to take the position as town secretary to the mayor when Max showed her around town hall and about the position.

Mandy woke up ready to go and to get started on her first day at her new job as the town secretary. She didn’t know who the Mayor, and knew she should’ve suspected something was up when Max said he knew the Mayor very well. As Mandy walked into Town Hall, fresh cup of coffee in hand, Max was already there waiting to show her to her office. She was grateful for him to be of help but she was will wary of how Max seemed to make her heart beat faster when he was nothing but a selfish playboy. As Mandy met her fellow co workers, there was a meeting scheduled of all the staff. When Mandy walked in, she saw a man who looked like an older version of Max sitting at the far end in the Mayor’s chair. Mandy almost lost her balance when a strong hand grabbed her arm to steady arm. She looked into the eyes of Max Wellington as he said “Mandy, i’d like you to meet my father, Mayor John Wellington.” John Wellington, Mandy noticed, was a proper man who stood tall and took his Mayor position seriously in this small town. He shook Mandy’s hand as he said “Welcome to Glenford, Max has told me so much about you.” Mandy looked around at her new coworkers and friends, and now at her boss and his son, smiled, and said “I’m very glad to be here sir.” And indeed she was happy to be there.
