Improv Comes to FMHS

The theater department has added an improve troupe division, FMHS Footlights.

In improv, the performer improvises his or her lines and actions. It is a basic skill that all actors must learn in order to play the character believably.

“We wanted to create an extension of the program to people who are not in the advanced class,” director Tiffany Weeks said. “Improv is an important skill, which can teach actors to be quick on their feet, and involve them in their character.”

This troupe was formed on the request of a student, who was wondering why FMHS did not have an improv troupe.

“A student came up and asked me if we could have an improv troupe,” Weeks said. “Knowing the importance of improv, I decided to try it.”

To get in the class, the theatre teachers held an open audition to anyone who has taken Theater I or Tech Theatre classes.

“If all goes well, there will be additional auditions in January,” Weeks said.

Since the troupe has just begun this year, it is not certain if the troupe will continue through the next few years.  Currently, the troupe hasn’t planned to enter any contests.

“This should be a really fun experience,” Weeks said.

Like Dramatic Paws and Paw ‘Prents, FMHS Footlights is a supporter of the International Thespian Society, and will be helping them with the canned food drive this month.

“Right now, we have one show scheduled for October 18th,” Weeks said. “To support the International Thespian Society, we are making the cost of admission one can, but you can feel free to bring more.”

The cans collected will support Christian Community Action (CCA) as part of Trick or Treat so Kids Can Eat, a community service program of the International Thespian Society.

FMHS Footlights plans on having one show every month, possibly supporting different charities. They are considering a Toys For Tots show in December, but the plans are not set in stone.

FMHS Footlights’ first show will be on October 18th from 6-7 P.M. in Drama A.
