They all came from different backgrounds, but were ready to educate. “I guess you could say it’s my dream to come work in Lewisville because its such a good district,” Bolitho said.

On the 14th and 15th of December, 13 of Flower Mound High School’s TAFE (Texas Association of Future Educators) members participated in a regional competition held at University of North Texas and Lake Dallas High School.

Out of 8 other high schools, FMHS will be represented by the following six students at TAFE’s state competition: Allison Denton, Rachel Downs, Jill Helbig, Katie Neighbors, Shelby Rose, Lizzy Skillett.

The event Project Visualize required seniors Morgan Womack and Alexis Tanferno to create and participate in a community service project.

In another event, Madeleine Phillips, Allie Rother, and Tara Sullivan participated in the Chapter Yearbook competition. In order to move onto state competition, they needed to document TAFE’s activities from this year.

Even though the competition is comprised of many different events, FMHS only competed in the three major events. The final event FMHS participated in was called Educational Leadership Fundamentals, an individual test. In ELF, students test over the foundations of education such as the history of education, developmental theories and a variety of other areas.

In order to continue to state, the students must make a grade of 90 or above.

“It was a multiple choice test, so it wasn’t as hard as I thought it was going to be,” senior Lizzy Skillett said. “There were about 90 other kids taking ELF, so I’m glad I’ll be one of the few who will go to state.”

For Project Visualize, Tanferno and Womack decided to host a school supply drive for Central Elementary who was in need of school materials. Overall, they collected 138 supplies for the local elementary. At the competition, they presented the success of their supply drive to a panel of judges.

“It went really well,” Womack said. “For our presentation, we made a tri-fold poster and wrote a 500 word summary that had pictures and different little props on it.”

As for Chapter Yearbook, they too had to be evaluated by judges.

“We had to present to a panel of four judges,” Phillips said. “They judged us on how well we discussed the scrapbook, how the scrapbook was put together and what materials we used.”

The TAFE members are eagerly anticipating their travels to San Antonio.

“I’m excited because I’ve never been there before and I really want to go,” Phillips said.

Overall, 11 FMHS students will participate in TAFE’s state competition at the beginning of February.
