Fast, relentless, and intense are only a few words that describe our Lady Jags soccer team. Only four games into the regular season, and these girls are already working hard.
While a 2-2-0 regular season record may not seem impressive, the Lady Jags are showing explosive play and excitement on the field.
The 2013 Lady Jags have a roster that is an almost even split of new and returning varsity players.
“As a freshman, varsity soccer is hard,” freshman Megan Heckendorn said. “We have to constantly play harder and harder to live up to the upperclassmen’s expectations.”
After a successful season last year the reigning district champs have returning players that know what it takes to win in this district.
“Our main concern in games is to play as a team,” senior Megan Crafton said. “We need to realize that our success is determined by our ability to play cooperatively.”
Head coach, Trina Hamner, has had successful teams before, but this is the most sophomore-and-junior-heavy team in years.
“The girls are progressing each game,” Hamner said. “At this rate, they’ll play great in the second half of district.”
After beating top-ranked Edward S. on Tuesday, the Lady Jags move to second in the district standings. There is currently a three-way tie for first place between Edward S., Coppell, and Hebron, all with a 3-1-0 district record.
The Lady Jags continue to work hard at practice and plan on not showing any team signs of weakness.
“We beat a team that was supposed to beat us,” senior A.V. Vigil said. “We aren’t going to let up for any team.”
With a win against the Raiders, the Lady Jags will move up in the district standings. The Lady Jags have a bye on Friday, but will resume play on Tuesday, February 26 at Denton Ryan.
