Orchestra Thief

By Hayun Park

Flower Mound Orchestra has been a safe environment for all kinds of students since the creation of the program. However, recently there has been a thief in the orchestra room. In the orchestra room, there is a little closet that students use to put away their instruments. Until now, there has never been a instrument going missing, but now dozens are being taken.

To put things into our perspective, a cheap bow costs $100. A violin ranges from $500 to unfathomable amounts of money. This is not a situation where simply a pen goes missing. It would give the student’s guardians a headache if they have to purchase a new one.

A day ago, on April 3rd, I opened my case to see that everything in the case was missing, except for the violin itself. This would mean that I lost the bow, rosin, and shoulder rest. I immediately reported this to the program’s directors, Mr. Bunte and Mr. Clink. They went and explained to me that this was happening to several other students, and they don’t know what they can do since it’s all happening in a room with no security.

I was annoyed, as that meant that there is nothing they can do, and I would simply have to purchase a new bow, shoulder rest, and rosin. I think that since such highly valuable items are all being stored in one room, they should heighten the security measures, or simply force people to start using locks. That way, no one can use or steal someone else’s instrument.

The orchestra directors also explained that when the thief gets caught, they’ll be immediately kicked out from the program, and the police will be called on them. I sincerely hope that they figure out who stole the other students’ and my instrument, and gets severe consequences as due.
