Practicing with the Band

During the summer, many people spend time with their families, go watch movies, or hangout with their friends. For band students, however, the summer is full of practice.

“In the beginning practice was hard because of all the heat and work, but after a while I began to get used to it since we practiced so much,” freshman Hannah Mulholland said.

Throughout the months of June and July, band practiced marching every Thursday. In August, they had to practice every day for 10 hours in the student parking lot to get better at marching.

“I felt like quitting when band camp started because it required so much work, but my body gradually began to get used to it,” senior Lydia Perez said.

Given that the required practice was a lot of work and time consuming, many students had the idea to quit.

Although rehearsals are complicated, many plan on staying in band all four years.

“I want to stay in band all four years because even though practice is hard is hard, you make a lot of friends and you learn to love all the hard work and effort you put in band,” Hannah said, “It also makes me happy to see all the people in the audience smiling after our show is over.”

Besides the foot ball games’ half time shows, band has competitions. They recently went to Conroe for a competition. They placed 6th and Band hopes for a spot at the national BOA (Bands of America) championships.

“On Saturday, we came to school at 2:00 am, then came back home the next day at 4:00 a.m.,” Lydia said.

“Although the students now know all of their techniques, they work hard in order to perfect their techniques and have a nice band experience,” Hannah said.
