Protests Sweep Post-Election America

Dan Thomas, News Writer

In the weeks following the presidential election, thousands of people have marched, shut down highways, and shouted angry slogans against Donald Trump as a result of the recent election. The crowds, fueled by social media, started protesting starting Wednesday night following the election, but continued into the early hours of Thursday morning.

Protests were reported in cities as diverse as Dallas, and Oakland. There were also marches in Boston, Chicago, Portland, Seattle, and Washington. In Oakland alone, the police department said that the protest started at 3,000 people at 7 p.m. and would grow to 6,000 just an hour later. The protest grew tense on Wednesday, with protesters starting small fires, and breaking windows. Police officers with riot gear would be called in to cease the situation.

In New York, crowds converged at Trump Tower, on Fifth Avenue at 56th Street in Midtown Manhattan, where the president-elect lives. They chanted “Not Our President” and “New York Hates Trump” and carried signs that said, among other things, “Dump Trump.” Restaurant workers in their uniforms briefly left their posts to cheer on the demonstrators. The protesters would cause many roads to be shut down as well.
