With over 51,000 unemployment claims in the last 7 weeks, Denton County citizens need help in any way. One of the biggest economical and physical aids to citizens is the LISD free meals.
When Denton County was declared a state of emergency that enabled more funding to go into giving free meals. With 14 locations, LISD has seen an increase in the demand and need for these lunches and they have delivered.
Currently from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., you can pick up lunch and breakfast for the next day. Anyone 18 and under can get a meal; you do not need to be a LISD student. On Friday, you can pick up two extra breakfasts and lunches for the weekend. Recently, it was decided that the LISD provided meals will continue through the summer. You can see all of the information here.
One of LISD’s top priorities in canceling school was figuring out a way to provide meals to their students. There was also the problem of where all the leftover food would go and what they would do about some of their staff. These LISD meals have positively impacted many people and because of that there has been an outpouring of gratitude to the Nutrition Staff. There are posters and notes given, gift cards, goody bags, etc. People are seeing the time and effort these essential workers are putting in and they are trying to give back.
