Bassett Single Sets Dramatic Scene

Ava Washington, J1 Guest Writer

Setting himself up to be a breakout star of 2021, Joshua Bassett, The High School Musical: The Musical: The Series lead actor started introducing himself as a singer-songwriter last year with the intimate ‘Common Sense’ and ‘Anyone Else’. But now he geared towards the release of his self-titled debut on March 12 with the impressive lead single ‘Lie Lie Lie’.

The song begins with an acoustic guitar that is then layered by more guitars, a leaning pop beat, and smooth vocal harmonies. The way all of these elements come together reminds me of early 2000’s pop which has a very nostalgic feeling to it.

“You’ve been lying to yourself, lie to everyone else Only thinking about yourself” He sings then adds “I know what you say about me. I hope that it makes you happy. You can’t seem to get me off your mind”. His main vocals capture an attitude which adds that extra spark to the song.

Fans have assumed he wrote this song about an ex lover. In fact, many suspect he wrote the song calling out his co-star from The High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Olivia Rodrigo… who were suspected to have had a relationship while filming the show. Overall fans are loving the raw drama and the new song.
