Apple Watch: Series 3 Review

Apple Watch: Series 3 Review
By: Preston Schaap

After much debate over whether or not the Apple watch would ever be of use to me, I finally got my hands on the Series 3. Although there are many things about the watch that I like, there are also a few negatives holding it back from being a true technological innovation.

At first glance, the Apple watch seems like your average smartwatch that’s basically a glorified clock with a few of the attachments your phone already has. After using it for three weeks now, I realize that it comes in handy on more than one occasion. For example, getting directions is much simpler now that my watch uses GPS to direct me and vibrates on my wrist whenever I approach a turn. Music is easily accessed and streams to my headphones with no lag. Monitoring my steps and calories burned is also helpful as well as the ability to text and call right from my wrist, completely avoiding the hassle of getting my phone out. And if I happen to have misplaced my phone and can’t find it, a simple little feature allows me to make my phone ring. The main feature that sets the Series 3 apart from its predecessors is complete water resistance and cellular data usage. The visual difference from the other watches is the new red button on the side indicating that it is cellular. Not being forced to take your phone out with you for a run or to a party is awesome. Working out is even better without a phone strapped to your arm or bouncing in your pocket.

On the downside, the interface is still a little confusing to navigate as it has been with the previous models and sometimes lags if not connected to your phone. And sometimes the watch can’t distinguish between me standing and sitting as it will alert me to stand sometimes when I’m already standing. Other than these few things that will no doubt be fixed soon, the watch does make my life simpler if only by a small amount.

Final score: 8/10
