Out of the 29 choir students who competed in the region competition, Flower Mound HS has 20 students moving on to Pre-Area.
In order to reach this point, the students had to sing and sight-read in front of a panel of judges. FMHS had 29 students place at the competition, and those choir members had the opportunity to perform with students from other schools.
“Out of 52 kids, 29 placed,” Choir Director Adela Martinez said. “All 29 performed in the concert.”
The performance was held at First United Methodist Church in Grapevine this past Saturday, November 2.
“We used the church instead of a school auditorium because it has better acoustics and improves the sound,” Martinez said.
Once students have completed region, they then advance to the second phase of competition—Pre-Area, on Thursday, November 8.
“We have 20 students advancing on to Pre-Area,” Martinez said. “From there, we will know who makes it to the round that determines state.”
Although there are no scholarships given to those who make Region, they do receive recognition for their accomplishments.
“The weekend is still pretty rewarding,” Martinez said. “We have college professors who usually run the rehearsals and concerts. So they get to spend a weekend learning what it would be like to sing in a college choir.”
