Fourteen of FMHS’s finest track athletes are advancing to the regional meet in Lubbock after performing admirably at the area meet on April 19th and 20th. Nine different track and field categories will move forward to compete on a regional level.
At the area meet, freshman Lauren Cox won 1st in discus, junior Lizzie Osondu won 1st in the 400M dash, and senior Justin McMillin won 1st in the 800M. The remaining eleven athletes each placed in the top four of their categories and are also qualified for region.
The runners competing must train hard to stay in shape for region. Beating their opponents won’t be easy, as the contending schools have experienced athletes.
“I’m actually pretty excited to see what region will bring,” McMillin said, “I know we’re facing some tough opponents, but I think FMHS should do well.”
The Jags definitely put in the hours for this competition.
“We have practice six days a week,” McMillin said. “Usually we run laps, do sprints, and even weight training if the coaches think we need it.”
Like McMillin, the players contending in the track division have to practice daily to better their chances.
“It’s very important to work hard and have a positive perspective,” first place winner Lizzie Osondu said. “Your attitude can have a major impact on your performance.”
As excited as they are, the FMHS track and field athletes are honored and thrilled to represent the school at the regional competitions.
