Hitting the auditorium from May 30 and 31 is this year’s Pop Show, entitled “An Evening in Gotham”.
Everyone participating in choir performs in the Pop Show. Auditions for singing solos were held in November while dance solo auditions were held earlier this month.
Since the end of last year’s Pop Show, choir director Mark Rohwer and choir teacher Adela Martinez have put in hours of hard work towards planning the show’s choreography, costume designs, tech and sound work, publicity, etc.
“Performing in the show is a lot of work, but it really pays off,” senior Varsity Choir member Addison Pattillo said. “We get to do music that we don’t normally do during the year, and we also get to dance.”
Emphasis on pop songs from the 1970’s to the 2000’s based on and inspired by New York City, which is the setting for the fictional Gotham City in the Batman comics, is the central theme for this year’s show.
“I’m expecting wild, raving standing ovations from the audience for this year’s Pop Show,” Martinez said.
Dancing is incorporated into the show by hiring professional choreographers to teach the material. Students, who serve as dance captains, teach the steps in each number to other choir members.
“When I talk to my students about the pop show, my favorite phrase is ‘if you aren’t a dancer, you are now!’,” Martinez said.
FMHS choir students are excited to participate in this year’s Pop Show and are anticipating their audience’s reaction when they perform their numbers for them.
The first performance of the show starts Thursday, May 30th at 7:30 PM.
