Just a Half-Step Behind

The Flower Mound Jaguars faced the Plano West Wolves for their homecoming game at Neal E. Wilson Stadium last Friday night. The final score, another loss for the Jags, was 41-6.

Senior Connor Wanhanen, last season’s starting quarterback, was injured during the team’s first scrimmage and is still recovering. Instead of his usual position, he played as wide receiver.

“I played receiver on Friday because the coaches saw it best for the team at this point,” Wanhanen said. “I’m still recovering from my ankle injury and it’s hard to be an effective quarterback with that. I played receiver my sophomore year, so it wasn’t a drastic transition.”

After Flower Mound’s unsuccessful first possession, Plano West quickly put points up. Wolve’s running back Sotonye Jamabo rushed for three consecutive first downs, the last being also a touchdown. The Wolves also had a successful two-point conversion.

Three repeated interceptions followed. Once Plano West had the ball back, Jamabo ran for the end zone.

The Jaguars were finally able to get the ball down the field towards the end of the quarter, but due to an incomplete pass on 4th and goal, Flower Mound was unable to score.

Going into the second quarter, the Wolves had a 15-0 lead over the Jags. Plano West moved down the field and kicked a 32-yard field goal.

After both teams had unproductive drives, senior kicker Andrew Hitscherich kicked a 35-yard field goal. By the end of the half, Plano was up 18-3.

The Wolves were quick to add to their lead after halftime. Plano West’s Robert Colmery ran 14 yards for a touchdown.

Senior quarterback John Hofmeister’s pass was intercepted, but the Jaguar defense held the Wolves from scoring.

Hofmeister threw a pass to Wanhanen, but was brought back to the 22-yard line. The good field position led Hitscherich to kick another field goal making the score 25-6.

With a few seconds under the four-minute mark, Plano West’s Colmery ran for an additional touchdown.

After a quick Jaguar 3 and out, the Wolves scored another touchdown. This would be Plano West’s last touchdown of the game, with only a Plano West field goal afterwards.

With the clock winding down, Flower Mound scrambled to get downfield but was unsuccessful.

The Jaguars are now 1-4 and last place in District 5-5A. This week they have a Bye week to prepare for district play. The non-district record will have no effect on their chances of getting to the playoffs.

Head coach Dane Johnson felt like the team gave it their all, but it still wasn’t enough.

“You can never get on to them about their effort,” Johnson said. “They always give such a great effort, but we need to execute perfectly; really sharp and crisp. We always seem to be half a step behind, both offensively and defensively.”

During the week off, the offense plans to work on their mistakes.

“We’re slowing a lot down this week and refocusing ourselves for this next phase of the season,” Wanhanen said. “Our schemes are in place. Now it’s all about repetitions and getting to where doing what we want is second nature.”

The Flower Mound Jaguars will play the Lewisville Fighting Farmers on October 11 at Neal E. Wilson Stadium for the first game of district play.
